Magic Shop Owners Session 4

Session Notes

Calendar Date: 5-3-569

The party woke up in the lab in Stagbrook Keep. Sphonyx and Geog did not wake up, but everyone else decided to continue exploring. They returned to the room where the staff and living armour had been to find a sleeping rust monster. After looking at the map, they saw there were rooms nearby that had no direct route to reach on the map, so they began searching for hidden doors. After a short search, they found what felt like a similar door to the one they had chanted "nepo" to open. They repeated this and opened the door.

Inside was a room where all the walls were lined with paintings. One drew the group's attention. It was a landscape with a door that shone brightly in the middle. Jatumal shouted "nepo" at it from a distance, but nothing happened. Then Breadwig poked his ten foot pole through it, and it became a part of the painting. Stinkcat then threw a dead duck into the painting, and it lay there in the landscape. Jatumal tried to jump into the painting, knocking it off the wall and falling to the ground himself. Next, they tried saying "nepo" and then entering the painting, which worked.

They were inside the painting and looked painted themselves. There was an easel with an image of the room they had just been in on it. The group did some more experimentation with this before following a trail of art supplies over a wall to find a wizard called Sarzan and the edge of the painted world. Here, there was just white, and the Wizard was painting the rest. He was a copy of the man who had painted the painting originally. He was wise and happy to help the group. He identified some magical items. The fire sword and the staff of disintegration. The group asked if they could take the painting back to their shop and offer consultations with him, to which Sarzan happily agreed.

Leaving the painting, the group easily got back to the surface and brought the still sleeping Sphonyx and Geog back by putting them into the painting. After which they set up a sign stating 30 gold for a consultation and upset Uddik, the man who had been appraising magic items for them, by suggesting using a sign that would change price based on the amount of money someone had with them.

Next, they returned to the Terrible Toad tavern to speak to the miners about the mines after learning more about the ignid from Sarzan. The miners were drunk and unhelpful, but they mentioned that one of their colleagues had gone missing. They then followed a trail up a cliff to find footprints turning into demon prints before disappearing. Seeing two landmarks, one a series an ancient stones and another a large tower, they decided to investigate.

First, they visited the tower, which had new fortifications that had been recently erected. On top of the gate were two cultists with Acman's symbol on their chests. Jatumal and Maia decided to try to infiltrate the wall by using the cultist robes that Jatumal had taken from one of their last encounter. Jatumal put on the robes, and Maia pretended to be a prisoner by covering herself in dirt. They reached the wall where Jatumal had a very unsuccessful attempt at persuading the cultists to let them in. The cultists opened the gates, releasing a horde of skeletons. The party then ran back towards Stagbrook, and eventually the skeletons turned back.

Next, they tried the stones where a Lamassu, A lion with wings and the head of a man, landed in their path, warning them not to go any further as it was the guardian of this place. It gave them an offer of gold to never go any further and was only interested in its one goal of protecting the stones. Not accepting the offer, the group returned to Stagbrook and visited the miners again.

The miners were mostly unhelpful once again, but did at least explain that Halstrea, the lost miner, had a symbol carved into her neck before she disappeared. They got the miners to draw this symbol and took it to Sarzan, who identified it as a succubus transformation spell. They explained this to the miners, who were mildly upset but ultimately not too bothered. Then found out more knowledge about the undead from Sarzan. They also found that Sarzan had been visited by Uddik, who wanted to know what items Sarzan had been identifying for them. He had paid them, though, at least. They got 30 gold.

Skeletons were weak to blunt trauma but not stabbing weapons. Cold was also ineffective against them. Sarzan knew holy things, light and sometimes fire were good against the undead. Finally, the party found out there was a church in Stagbrook before sleeping.
