Magic Shop Owners Session 1

Session Notes

Calendar Date: 2-3-569

Everyone arrived in Stagbrook after receiving a letter looking for Barnaby Hope at roughly late morning. All were cautiously observing the goings on around the village until Geog, a dwarf, began shouting for Barnaby at the top of his lungs. He let out three great bellows. On the second, a villager carrying a basket of eggs began to approach him, and the third was directly in her face. She kindly explained where Barnaby lived and sold Geog 10 eggs for 1gp.

Geog approached Barnaby's house with the others, hearing the whole thing, following closely behind. There is no answer to the door, so they all began looking around the house. In this process, they all realise they are in Stagbrook for the same thing and make a pact. They will work together for the inheritance, but if anyone else comes for it, then they will deal with them. The group noticed an open window with a candle flickering. Geog and Jatumal decide to throw an egg through it while Stinkcat and Maia begin climbing up. The egg hits Stinkcat, and they and Maia climb into the room.

Inside, they found Barnaby, who was upset to be disturbed from his work again. He scurried away and met everyone outside. Then he went to present them the keys to Lucinda's magic shop, but found they were missing. He explained that a Nilbog must have stolen them. The team go to The Terrible Toad to eat and work out what to do next. Inside, they met Darian, who is also there for his inheritance, tried unsuccessfully to talk to a cloaked figure, and found out how to access the keep below, where the Nilbog is, from the barmaid Havana Crawley.

Jatumal and Stinkcat stayed in the tavern and convinced Darian, a simple potter, to help them retrieve the keys to the shop from the ruined keep below, while the others attempted to break into the shop. Geog tried to get his crowbar into the door and was instantly thrown backwards. Breadwig determined there was a powerful magical seal on the shop. After this, they all decided to go to the keep to retrieve the keys, apart from Stinkcat, who stayed ready to ambush Darian when they left the keep.

(Mike and Jay left. Mike was just dropping Jay off somewhere, so his character became stiff as a board, and Geog began carrying Breadwig around)

Geog led the party down the narrow steps, lighting the way. Darian produced a map he had been given in the tavern that some previous adventurers had drawn of the early sections of the keep. It showed the Nilbog's home. There is a partially triggered spike trap that they all get lucky and manage to avoid on the way down. Inside the first room was an old dining hall with discarded plates and mugs. On the wall was a deer head. Maia flicked a stone at the head with a slingshot, causing it to fall from the wall. Being is a jewellery box with a golden beetle inside. There were also cave locusts in the room. These creatures looked like stone statues to the characters. Geog touched one, which skittered away. Maia tried to wear the beetle broach in an attempt to control them. Instead, it began burrowing into her skin. Jatumal managed to heave it off. Then they tried to smash one with a mallet. It screeched, attracting a swarm of bats from a nearby room.

The bats were not too difficult for the group to deal with. Afterwards, they continued following the map from a previous adventurer to where it said the Nilbog lived. They used Breadwig's stiff body, which had two ten foot poles attached to bridge a pit trap, at which point he awoke from his slumber. Luckily, he managed to hold it together as each of the party members crossed over him. Then the players emerged in an armoury. Inside, many giant centipedes were crawling over some bodies and along the walls of the room. The centipedes charged. Breadwig threw a flask of oil at the approaching beasts, and Maia used Geog's torch to light them while Geog lit a new one. This burnt the centipedes in the centre of the room, but a few on the walls were still coming. The characters were able to kill these with ranged attacks before they did any damage.

Exploring the room, they found two chests. One had a few trinkets which Jatumal took while Breadwig levered the other open with a pole, causing a fireball to be shot across the room. Jatumal was able to dodge this. Inside was a sword with a red glow. Breadwig gave this to Geog, who tested it on a dead centipede, which melted as the sword touched it. Geog also tried to wear a rusted helmet from a suit of armour, which sent a centipede lunging at him. Jatumal pinned it to the wall with a thrown dagger.

Next, they convinced Darian to open a door which was particularly well maintained by saying Nilbog's were scared of potters. The door fell toward him, his head going straight through it. Then the wood began to grow towards his neck, suffocating him. First, they tried to cut him out with daggers, then Geog set the door on fire with the magic sword. Maia put the fire out with her water skin, but also got some in Darian's mouth, then Breadwig managed to use oil to slip Darian from the door, who was now unconscious. Geog looted him while the Nilbog laughed at them all through the doorway.

The characters talked to the Nilbog, trying to explain that Darian had intruded and they were just stopping him, but the Nilbog did not really care. It began showing the party all the shiny things it had. This resulted in the whole party playing the spoons with the Nilbog while Jatumal did some beat-boxing. Breadwig tried to loot the Nilbog while this happened, which put a sudden stop to the jam. The Nilbog then asked them why they were there. Eventually, it found out they wanted their keys. It said they could have them if they could answer one of three riddles. They got the first right. Then it offered treasure and secrets for the other two. They got one right and got the treasure. Geog tried to strangle the Nilbog, who disappeared with all of its trinkets.

Geog tried to do CPR on Darian, killing him. While crossing back over the pit, they decided to investigate. They threw Darian down, who did not hit the bottom, then a torch, which revealed a small outcropping. They then used a rope to lower Jatumal down. He found a necklace caught on a rock and was chased back up by a giant ant. The players managed to push the ant back down with Breadwig's poles and arrows from Maia. They then left the keep, triggering the spike trap one by one on the way back up until Breadwig figured out only the lower spike was working and jumped over.

On the surface, the players opened the lock to the magic shop, revealing various trinkets, all of great power. Jatumal took a boat with a high price tag from the shelves, and the cloaked figure stood in the doorway. He threw off his tattered cloak, revealing an ornate one beneath. Then he cast paralysis on everyone, chanting about them unlocking the power. Maia and Jatumal were frozen, but Breadwig and Geog were not. Geog charged while Breadwig cast a sleep spell. The spell did not affect the magic user who proclaimed himself as Acman, and he was able to divert Geog's attack without it touching him. He then cast vines from the ground that held Breadwig and Geog in place while he put all the treasures in the room into a bottomless bag and then disappeared. The disheartened party went to bed in their new home.
