We Need More Optimistic Writing
I have noticed that writing has tended to become more pessimistic over time. I enjoy a dark or dystopian setting occasionally, Brave New World, 1984 and the The Mistborn Saga series are some of my favourite books. I also love Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad, but just because there is some great stuff with dark settings it doesn't mean everything needs to be. There are some great tales with more optimistic outlooks. I do think optimistic writing is probably harder though.
I think a great example of writing becoming more pessimistic is Star Trek. Star Trek The Next Generation is the series I have watched most. Each episode has a problem but the crew always work hard to find a solution and rarely falter in their attempts because they have faith in each other and their abilities. They are all highly skilled and intelligent people who can solve problems effectively. On the other hand, recent series such as Star Trek Discovery have characters who frequently come up against problems that they frame as being the end of the universe. Many of the crew are undisciplined and prone to making bad decisions and the tone is much darker. I think this shift is partially due to the move away from episodic stories and to keep the viewer invested in one plot for a whole series but something is lost in this shift.
Instead of a crew venturing out into the galaxy to find new things and to help people in need, we have a crew barely scraping by and saving the university by the skin of their teeth. We have lost the story of people motivated by the will to help, learn or discover. Instead we really just have a story of survival.
