Permadeath In Games
Recently I have been interested in permadeath in games. I think it ramps up the tension and makes you use the full sandbox of a game. I think this originated from watching Try Permadeath, You Won't Regret It at some point in 2024, but I only got the urge to actually do it recently. I think I had gotten fed up with the way I was playing games. I was just trying to finish things rather than enjoying them. Permadeath adds enough extra to an easyish game to keep it exciting, and makes me more likely to just stop playing a game if I die, because I don't want to play it all again.
There are a few ways to play permadeath. Many games have it as an option, others have mods that add it or you can self impose it.
My favourites so far:
- Hitman World of Assassination Freelancer mode - The most fun I have had with the game in a long time after I worked it out.
- Into the Breach - A fun turn based tactics game where you restart if all your mechs die.
Games that could work:
- Batman Arkham Asylum (self imposed, normal, delete save if you die) - I got about a third of the way through on my first run but reckon I could do this one.
- Minecraft Hardcore mode - Setting a goal in this and trying to complete it would be fun.
- Halo games - Have skulls which make you restart a level if you die, this could be a fun way to play on Heroic or normal for the whole game and self imposed.
