Are the LOTR Films Good Adaptations of the Books

One thing came up in discussion with a colleague of mine was if The Lord of the Rings films are good adaptations of the source material. I read the books, apart from the hobbit, after watching the films many times. What I see in the films is a retelling of the same story with some tweaks to make it work better for the medium of film and the removal of some of the weirder and I think worse plotlines. I also do not disagree with a tale being recreated with a different vision as long as it is told well. These films are an incredible retelling if you ask me.
